The United Nations is marking 2008 as International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE). It is certainly time for us to take stock. For almost four billion years Earth and Life have had interwoven histories and recent research by earth scientists and biologists has revealed some wonderful new insights into those interactions. The programmes developed during IYPE by scientists across the world must help us to understand our unique human responsibilities for our own fate. We cannot take the Planet for granted!
