Traffic problems - Wednesday 1st October

Mound closure: diversions
The Council and tie, our arms-length company delivering the tram system, thank you for your patience if you have experienced any delays to your travel this morning. Traffic queues are now reducing and moving, following action we have taken to rectify some initial problems.

From today, The Mound is closed north of Market Street in order to carry out tram utility works at the Mound/Princes Street junction.  The work involves moving utility pipes and cables away from where the tram track will eventually be.

The work at this junction also means that no through-traffic (ie. buses, cycles and taxis) is allowed on Princes Street between the junction of Frederick Street and South St David Street.  This morning's delays were due to some technical problems with traffic signals and drivers becoming accustomed to the new road layout.

We thank all drivers and residents for their patience this morning and remind them of the official diversion routes.  North and south-bound buses, taxis and cycles are being diverted along Hanover Street, Waverley Bridge and Market Street. North and south-bound general traffic is being diverted along South St David's Street, Waverley Bridge and Market Street.  Local access will be maintained for deliveries.

Major Utility Diversions - The Mound (Princes Street Junction)

Major utility diversions will take place on Princes Street at the junction with The Mound and Hanover Street. Preparatory works started on 1 September and utility diversions will commence from 1 October until April 2009, with a break for the Christmas Embargo.

This work will result in The Mound being closed to all traffic, which will be diverted via Waverley Bridge and Market Street.

Princes Street will be closed to through traffic between the junction of Frederick Street and South St David Street. Local access will be maintained for deliveries. General traffic and bus diversion routes will be clearly signposted.

Shandwick Place re-opens

The street will re-open to buses, taxis and cyclists on Monday 28th July.

All other vehicles will follow the existing proven traffic management measures which will be kept in place for the Haymarket Utility works and for the future construction of the tram infrastructure work.

The Shandwick Place utility diversion work was a vital part of the tram project programme, involving unprecedented traffic management and logistic issues for tie that involved collaboration and engagement with the City Of Edinburgh Council, Lothian Buses, the Police and other emergency services, businesses and the local community.

The objective to successfully complete the work and for Shandwick Place to be re-opened before the city centre festival embargo has been achieved. The next stage of work on Shandwick Place is scheduled for September 2009.

Tram Utility Work to Start at Gogar Roundabout

For a period of 4 weeks from Monday 28th July 2008,  tram utility works will take place at the Gogar Roundabout adjacent to the Gyle Shopping Centre.

It will require reducing the four lanes on the north side of the roundabout to two. As in our other sections of work, important temporary traffic management solutions have been carefully developed so as to ensure the free flow of traffic. These include further lane closures on the City Bypass approach, the A8 eastbound and the roundabout itself.

Associated enabling work starting the week commencing Monday 21 July will see the introduction of necessary traffic management measures and signage preparations.
