Hallmarking

The relevant legislation is the Hallmarking Act 1973.

All precious metal (gold, silver, platinum) items must be hallmarked, with certain exceptions.

This applies not only to jewellery but also to other items made of precious metals, for instance, photograph frames.

The legislation is designed to ensure that the quality of precious metal items is regulated and that potential customers are able to verify this by checking that an item bears a hallmark.
