Trade associationsTrade associations exist for many different types of business, and generally make their members satisfy certain conditions. For example, some organisations have strict vetting procedures at application stage, including checks on applicants’ workmanship. In the event of a dispute between the client and trade member, some organisations provide a conciliation or arbitration service. Before you employ someone on the basis of a trade association membership claim, such as a logo in a telephone directory, consider contacting the relevant association. This will allow you to check whether the trader really is a member, and if so, what checks have been carried out on their work, and whether the association can offer you any support if things go wrong. If a trader falsely advertises membership of an association, this may be a criminal offence. Contacts
